Off the Train

Off the Train

Toad jumped, bounced, and rolled down a hill. Beside the tracks were some woods. Toad ran and hid behind a tree. The engineer’s train sped away.

“ Here they come, ” Toad said to himself. The policemen’s train zoomed past. “ And there they go! ” he shouted.

Toad could hear the policemen. “ Stop! Stop! ” they yelled. “ The clever Toad wins again! ” Toad laughed. He laughed so hard that tears ran down his face.

The sound of the trains disappeared. Toad set out through the strange woods. It was cold and getting dark. “ I wish I had something to eat, ” he said.

An owl flew by and bumped Toad’s arm. “ Hey! ” cried Toad. “ Don’t do that! ” “ Who? Who? Who’s scared?” said the owl. “ Be quiet! I’m not scared, ” said Toad, shivering.
