Do you know where to find Bangladesh on a map? Most people have heard of it, but can’t find it. We’ll give you a hint: it is somewhere in Asia. Bangladesh is surrounded by India and a tiny part of Myanmar. It is a small country, but it is a strong country. For hundreds of years, Bengalis have lived through many wars.

And every year from May to October, the country is flooded by the monsoons and overflowing rivers. But the Bengalis have survived. With the wars and the flooding, you might think the people are depressed . But they aren’t. The Bengalis like to say, “ We don’t have much, but we are proud of what we do have. ” If you visit Bangladesh, you will see that this is very true.

Everywhere you go in Bangladesh, the Bengalis show artistic pride in what they have. The women wear beautiful saris and salwar kameez. It takes eight and a half meters of fabric to make a sari, and the women wrap it around and around to make a dress. It does not take as much fabric to make a salwar kameez, and the women say it is easy to wear.

Both the sari and the salwar kameez are made out of bright and beautiful fabrics that give a feeling of life and happiness. Believe it or not, the men actually wear skirts, called lungis. The lungi is made out of bright patterns and colors just like the women’s clothes. And when they need to ride a bicycle or walk through deep water, they pull it up and tuck it in so that it looks like shorts.

For some people, all they own are the clothes they wear. But like all Bengalis, they show great pride by making their clothes very colorful. Bengalis are also artistic when they travel. Because cars are so expensive, many Bengalis ride in rickshaws.
