Marvin in the Deep Blue Sea
Marvin was a goldfish who lived in a pond in Lily’s backyard. Every day, Lily would feed all the goldfish. She loved to watch them swim about and gave each one a name. Marvin was her favorite because he had an especially long and beautiful tail. Marvin loved his home. He loved to swim in the clear, green water and play among the lily pads and tall reeds.
Best of all, there was a waterfall. The pond was just perfect. Marvin couldn’t imagine living anywhere else. One day, Marvin heard a frog bragging about what he did outside the pond. “ There’s way more to do out there, ” said the frog. “ More bugs to catch, and there are rabbits and squirrels-all kinds of new things to see. ”
Suddenly, the pond didn’t seem so great anymore. But Marvin was a fish. He couldn’t go anywhere without water. “ Wait, ” he thought, “ where is there more water than in this pond? The sea! It’s bigger than big! ” He thought of the fantastic sea creatures he’d meet, and the secret caves he’d discover. He had to get there. Marvin soon became grumpy. His friends noticed.
“ Why are you sad?” they asked. “ I don’t like it here anymore. I want to be out in the deep blue sea! ” “ Yeah, in your dreams! ” they laughed. But Marvin wouldn’t give up his dream. One night, there was a rainstorm. The water in the pond started to rise. “ This could be my only chance to get out of here! ” thought Marvin.
When the water seemed high enough, he swam right over the rocks around the pond. He was free! The rainwater carried him to a stream, where he swam and swam. Suddenly, a huge turtle dived in beside him. It made such a big splash that Marvin sailed up in the air. He landed in a puddle surrounded by tall weeds. He was stuck! Marvin was scared and all alone. What was he going to do?
