Animal Rescue

Ethan was driving with Dad in the mountains. Dad was excited about their spring camping trip. He loved the outdoors, and this was his favorite time of year. Ethan didn’t really like camping though. He preferred to stay indoors and solve brainteasers. " Isn’t nature beautiful?” asked Dad. “ Yep, ” muttered Ethan.

" Camping is a lot of work, ” Dad went on. “ But spending time outdoors is fun. Remember, don’t disturb nature during our trip, okay?” " No problem! ” said Ethan. He tried to ignore nature as much as possible— especially all the bugs in the woods. He stared out the window at the boring scenery.

Just then he spotted something strange. Up ahead, next to the roadside barrier, a deer was frantically pacing back and forth. " I think something’s wrong, ” said Ethan. “ Dad, pull over! ” " That’s not a good idea, ” said Dad. “ It’s best to leave wild animals alone. ” " Please, Dad. Pull over! ” Ethan repeated.

" The deer looks upset. ” Reluctantly, Dad parked on the side of the road and turned on the car’s hazard lights. The two of them got out and slowly approached the deer. It appeared afraid, but it didn’t run away. " Look! ” yelled Ethan, pointing to a ditch below. A young fawn was standing in a rushing stream.

" The deer’s fawn is stuck down there. We have to save it! ” Dad shook his head. “ There’s nothing we can do. This slope is too steep for us. ” Ethan spotted the forest ranger’s number on a nearby sign. He called the number and explained the situation.

Soon Tucker, the forest ranger, arrived. He looked down into the ditch and frowned. " I can’t get down there by myself, ” he said. Ethan nervously watched the stream’s current. It was moving faster and nearly knocked the fawn over. " Maybe we can think of another solution, ” Ethan blurted out. " What if we formed a human chain? We could pull the fawn up. ”
