The People That You Meet
“ Happy needs to go for a walk, ” says Mother. “ Take him for a walk around the neighborhood. Here’s a basket and a shopping list. Please get everything on the list for dinner. ” So now, Happy and I are walking down the street.
Happy is wagging his tail. He loves going for a walk around the neighborhood. All the store owners know us. And Happy loves all the strange and wonderful smells. First, I go into the bakery.
Mrs. Thompson always gives me a cookie with lots of chocolate chips. I buy some garlic bread. “ Bye, Mrs. Thompson, Thank you! ” I say. There’s Mr. James, the butcher. He’s always singing Italian songs.
He wears a white apron. He sells all kinds of meat: pork, beef, and chicken. He throws Happy a bone. Happy loves the butcher shop! My favorite store is Purdy’s Chocolate House. The girl who works there goes to my school. She is in grade seven.
Her mom makes the best fudge. Sometimes she lets me lick the spoon. We have two more things to get for Mommy: fish and cucumbers. Happy and I go to the fish market down by the river.
