Team Spirit

Mike is a student at Woodlawn Elementary School. He is in the fourth grade. There are fifteen students in his class—seven girls and eight boys. It is springtime. The students love to play outside. It’s time to go to PE class. Mr. Rabinovich is the PE teacher. He is a very nice teacher.

He and the students are having class outside today. It’s too nice to play inside. “ What are we going to play today?” the students ask. “ Whatever you kids want to play, ” Mr. Rabinovich says. . “ It’s your decision. ” The girls decide they want to play soccer. Seven boys decide they want to play baseball.

“ It’s all up to Mike, ” Mr. Rabinovich says. “ Do you want to play soccer or baseball, Mike?” Mike, the eighth boy, looks at the other boys. Then he looks at the girls. “ Well, I don’t want to play baseball. ” “ Hooray! ” the girls scream. “ And I don’t want to play soccer, ” Mike says. Everyone is quiet.

“ You don’t want to play baseball, and you don’t want to play soccer?” Mr. Rabinovich asks. “ Well, Mike, what do you want to play?” Mike looks at the girls. They are not happy. Then Mike looks at the boys. They are not happy either. “ Come on, Mike, ” one of the boys says.

Do you want to play baseball or soccer?” “ I want to play kickball, ” Mike says. “ You want to play kickball?” one of the girls asks. “ Yes, ” Mike says. “ That’s stupid, ” one of the boys says. “ He can’t choose kickball, ” one of the girls says. “ He can only pick baseball or soccer. ”
