Sinking Fast

It was a spring morning. A woman was driving to work. “ I hope I’m not late, ” she said. “ I don’t want to be fired! ” The woman parked her car outside a construction site. She ran toward the gate. “ Oh no! ” said the woman. “ I left my lunch in the car! ”

Suddenly the ground rumbled! A hole appeared, and the car began to sink! The woman gasped. “ My car! ” Roxy and her friends were walking to soccer practice. “ I love spring, ” said Jack.

“ That’s because you love soccer, ” said Mara. Jack grinned. “ I just like playing outside. ” “ Who doesn’t like playing outside?” Terrell asked. “ I bet Rocket Girl is an awesome soccer player, ” said Jack. “ Nobody could beat her, ” said Terrell.

Mara smiled. “ She could score even while playing goalie! ” Terrell pretended to kick a ball. “ She could kick the ball past everyone. ” “ Down the whole field! ” said Jack. “ It wouldn’t be fair for Rocket Girl to play, ” said Roxy. “ She has super powers. Would you want to play against her?”

“ Rocket Girl would be on our team! ” said Terrell. The four friends arrived at the school’s soccer field. “ Sorry, kids, ” Coach Nicole called out. She looked upset. “ No practice today. ” Jack frowned. “ Why not?” “ It’s so strange, ” Coach Nicole said, pointing behind her.
