The School Garden

It was late at night. A guard walked through an old army base. “ It’s a quiet night, ” the guard said to himself. “ Maybe I’ll take a nap in the office. ” The guard went around the corner of a building and gasped. “ Oh no! ” he cried. “ One of the army tanks was stolen! ”

“ This is great! ” said Terrell. “ I love being outside on a school day! ” Roxy and her friends were in the school garden. They were helping Mr. Green. “ Good morning, everybody! ” said Mr. Green. “ We’re going to have lots of fun today. Everybody needs gardening gloves and a trowel. ”

Roxy and her friends got their gardening equipment. Jack grinned. “ I can’t wait to get dirty! ” “ I have lots of seeds for flowers and vegetables, ” said Mr. Green. “ Each of you can choose what you want to plant. With time and care, all the plants will grow! ”

Mara picked out some sunflower seeds. “ I love sunflowers, ” she said. “ They’re so big and bright. ” “ I want fresh vegetables for lunch, ” said Roxy. “ I’m going to plant carrots and lettuce. ” Jack made a face. “ Who cares about vegetables? I just like digging in the dirt! ”

He stuck his trowel into the ground. He scooped out some soil. Then he picked up a wiggling, little worm. “ Cool! ” Jack held the worm out to his friends. “ Eww, ” said Terrell. “ Keep that thing away from me! ” “ That’s gross, Jack, ” said Mara.
