A Birthday Party for Nick

Alice saw Grandma grabbing her coat. “ Where are you going?” she asked. “ I’m going to the homeless shelter, ” said Grandma. “ Want to come?”

“ What will we do there?” asked Alice. “ Help some people, ” said Grandma. “ Okay, ” said Alice.

Grandma and Alice arrived at the shelter. First, they painted the kitchen with other volunteers. By lunchtime the walls were bright yellow. “ Beautiful! ” said Alice. “ What’s next?”

“ Babysitting, ” said Grandma. “ Several moms live here. “ “ One has to go to work. ” “ We’re going to take care of her son. ”

Alice read Nick a dinosaur book. The little boy followed Alice everywhere.

“ My birthday is tomorrow, ” said Nick. “ Will you have a party?” asked Alice. “ No, ” said Nick quietly.
