The next day Tom went to the picnic. He didn't bring Cat.

Tom tried to play games. But he was still worried about Dirk. He got some food and sat down. Suddenly someone sat next to him.

It was Ann! Tom dropped his plate in surprise. “ I heard you were looking for me, ” Ann said. “ I was at wizard school yesterday. ”

Tom picked up his spilled food. “ Why does Dirk hate me?” he asked.

Ann looked sad. “ My father is the head servant, ” she said. “ But the royal wizard is much more powerful. This makes Father upset. ”
