Cat hissed again. Tom tapped his pocket to make her stop. Dirk frowned at Tom.

The queen blew her nose with a honk! “ I want a special dog for Prince Eric, ” she said. “ See what you can do, Tom. ” Tom gulped. “ I’ll try, Your—”

Dirk stepped forward with an evil smile. “ Tom will start working at once, Your Majesty! Right, Tom?” “ Right! ” Tom said nervously.

Outside the Throne Room, Dirk glared at Tom. “ I know that cat is in your pocket, ” he said. Tom froze as Dirk leaned in close.

“ Keep that cat away from the queen, ” Dirk growled. “ And if you fail at this birthday task . . . You’ll be thrown in the Grim Dungeon! ”
